Etymology: Thurneysen Glotta 12, 145 supposes haplology from *ἀπυ-πολιῶναι `give back'; cf. ἀπολεῖν. Better Buck, Gr. Dial. $162, 10, who understands `regulate, annul' and connects ἀπο-λειόω `erase' (s. λεῖος) with iotacism and inf. ending -ωναι.
